ATM's used to be referred to as "just a hole in the wall that changed the world". In the modern era this gadget is common yet, in the 1960s, it was a "wonder". Customers had to visit the bank if they wanted to withdraw cash. In 1939, a device created by American inventor Luther George Simjian was installed at Citibank in New York without success. John Shepherd Barron's Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) was then installed and claimed to be the world's first ATM. However that system still had many flaws. Many people were skeptical to use it as they had never used such sophisticated technological equipment.

At the time the ATM PIN was originally proposed to be 6 digits long but Caroline, wife of John Adrian Shepherd-Barron, unfortunately could not remember the 6 digit long PIN and so its length was reduced to 4 digits.

As many banks issue ATM cards to their customers, the default ATM PIN is 6 digits long. Later customer can manually change it to 4 digits by himself.
